Join our berry pie contest!

Ooh, what a tasty contest it was! the LiBerry Music Festival library benefit featured a panel of celebrity judges: Nancy Drew, a Hardy Boy (who won his place on the panel by bidding for the privilege), and, um, somebody else of the sleuthing variety... anyway, it was loads of fun. The winners were:

Best Overall Pie: Jen Otey, for her wheat-free mixed berry pie

2nd place: Terry Koltak, for his delicious Peace Pie with cherries

3rd place: Kate Billington, for her blackberry-rhubarb lattice crust pie

honorable mention and Most Refreshing: Mary Ireland, for a cold cream-and-blueberry pie

honorable mention and Best Presentation: Jay Stange's deep-dish delish

A yummy cake made by Katie Ireland and a Clare's apple pie (featuring Alaska-grown apples from right here in the Tanana Valley, Chena Hot Springs Road!) made by Jody Hassle also made their appearance.

Our celebrity judges included well-known Fairbanks foodies Jennifer Jolis, chef and restauranteur (A Moveable Feast, Jennifer's), and Cyndie Warbelow-Tack, greenhouse operator and pie-baker (Tack's Greenhouse & Restaurant, the Plant Kingdom).

The judges were emphatic that the difference in quality was minute, and that they had a wonderful time. They're ready to do it again next year! Participants are requested to provide their recipes for the Throwdown Recipes book to raise funds for the library at a future date. Please! They were soo good! (only crumbs were left when the crowd got through with them)
